Sunday Stew: June 26, 2011

Sunday Stew is a weekly meme hosted by Shannon of Books Devored.

Bookmarks I Bought This Week: Even though we know that my TBR pile is ridiculous, I had $25 worth of Barnes & Nobles gift cards to burn.  Plus, this weekend there was a coupon code floating around to get $5 off any order, so that's $30 worth of books for free (and free shipping for orders over $25, which is an excuse I use to buy more books from Amazon or B&N.)  Here's what I bought...
(I'm addicted to memoirs/true stories and the tale of a male who helps abandoned boys in Nepal.  I can't pass it up.  It's been on the wish list for a while.)
(During my hellish trip to Wal-Mart, I was enchanted by this one in the book section.  It sounded different and it has a key on front and steam punk symbols.  What's not to like? I wanted to get this book for my mom for Mother's Day, but BFF Sarah said that she wouldn't like it. OK, I was trying to get it for me.)
(I know this isn't a book, but I've been hearing about Adele for months now.  I don't buy a lot of music because I get it for free to review on Backseat Writer, but after hearing our very own Shannon of Books Devoured mention Adele's song, "Rollin' in the Deep" and hearing it on the radio, I figure it was time to get this one.)

After using my coupon and my gift cards, my total was $6.38 (darn taxes!), but I had some cash-o-lah in my PayPal account, so the grand total was...ZERO!  Hooray!  Before you go on thinking I'm the luckiest gal in the world, keep this in mind--I paid $40 for a toothbrush today at Target--and it was on sale!!!  Yeah, more on my dentist appointment to come.

Around The Web: Still wondering about that Wal-Mart trip?  Then head on over to Backseat Writer and check out this week's Friday Faves: "I Survived My Wal-Mart Shopping Experience Edition."  It's chock full of good stuff like a video of Maddy the Shih Tzu attacking mailing materials and this video about howler monkeys, which I'm about to show you, but it's so much better in the context of Friday Faves.

"Like a combination air raid siren and heavy metal guitar solo."  Love it. It might have to go on my Facebook quotes--a place of honor.

Now, for this week's exciting giveaways...

Why, it's my very own giveaway taking place RIGHT NOW at Backseat Writer until 11:59 PM EST on July 1. If DaySpring ships to you, then you can enter.

Mark your calendars because this Friday is the start of the Freedom Giveaway Hop hosted by Simply Stacie and I Am A Reader, Not A Writer!  And, yes, Backseat Writer will be giving away a $10 Amazon gift card or $10 book of choice to The Book Depository.  I'll remind you to enter again next week!

Gabrielle over at The Mod Podge Bookshelf is hosting a nifty giveaway to celebrate one year of blogging on July 26, but she likes to get the party started early.  If Gabrielle reaches 1,000 between now and July 26, then EIGHT people will each win FIVE books! If she doesn't reach 1,000 followers, then we all have to give her FIVE books.  Just kidding!  In that sad case, then the Top 3 Tweeters will get THREE books each.  I don't have to do the math to tell you that FIVE is better that THREE, so get following!

My buddy, author Jenny B. Jones is hosting a "Mostly YA Fab Author Summer Extravaganza" (MYFASE for short.  She even made the trendy graphic accompanying this announcement.)  Starting Monday, June 27, readers can win a book a day leading up to the big event--a giveaway of an ARC of There You'll Find Me, Jenny's forthcoming book.  So. Much. Excitement.

From now until July 1 at midnight (CST), you can enter to win YOUR CHOICE of a bunch of June releases.  The choice is so enormous, you just have to head over to Addicted 2 Novels to see if for yourself.  The giveaway is international as long as The Book Depository ships to you.  So, get entering!

Jay Asher's acclaimed book, Thirteen Reasons Why has just been released to paperback, and you can win one of two copies over at Words on Paper.  The giveaway ends July 2 and it is international.

Around Me: On Friday, I went to romantic, enchantic Atlantic City on a trip run by my apartment complex.  BFF Sarah and I paid $5 each to head on over to Caeser's and roam about the boardwalk, which was hot and made me cranky.  But I made you guys this video anyway.  I hope you like windblown hair...

I also hope you humor me as I try to make use of my undergraduate news media classes.  I never got to anchor our video journalism class's news program because I was in the hospital.  Honestly, I've gotten a little beat up by life since I was an idealistic 21 year-old college junior, so I'm a little camera-shy (yes, I can be shy!)  Actually, I'm not.  I'm not camera-shy at all.  I am afraid that I will look fat on camera, which I will because I am fat (I am not saying that as a derogatory remark; I am simply stating the obvious.)  I do fear that people will see I am fat and that is all they will see about me--not asking how I came to be this way or what's going on in my life or even stop to consider anything but the fact I probably shove food in my face all day, that I'm unintelligent, and I'm lazy.  That's what I fear.  So people might think that and that's OK (it's really not), but I must stop living my life for other people.  This is the first of many awesome videos starring ME...because I honestly love the camera and I think the camera loves me.
Our "tour" group received $25 in casino cash to use at Caeser's.  I went home with $5 (even though you only see $4 in this photo...the other dollar is hiding.)  Today I bought I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings at Target with my winnings.  I mean, after the $40 toothbrush, it only seemed right.
This is a lovely view of the beach from the third floor of the air-conditioned Pier Shoppes.  They set up fake sand and Adirondack chairs, so it was like being at the beach without the blistering sun, heat, humidity, seagull poop, and annoying people.  Perfecto.

BFF Sarah and I did eventually wander outside and I took this picture of us from the deck of the Pier Shoppes.  I think we're sunburned.
This was part of a wall mural in the casino.  I thought it was pretty, so I snapped a photo. So, yeah, that was our trip, which almost didn't happen because BFF Sarah's lip swelled up A LOT Thursday night.  I had to take her to the Urgent Care Center where she received a Prednizone shot for out of control allergies.  It was pretty wild.

Finally, the dentist.  It was not good.  I never want to go back.  Ever.  But I have to get stuff done and buy $40 toothbrushes.  Sigh. Such is life.

I'm too tired to ask any insightful questions.

  3. Wow, you got some great stuff from Borders. Are you loving the rest of the Adele album?

I loved your vlog! I wish that you had gotten to see DMB. I like their music still. I have never seen them though and I think it would be a good concert! It looks like you and your BFF had a good time! =)
